60th Birthday: Great living with 6 decades of Blessings

Everyday is a blessing to be celebrated. With the uptick and rise of COVID-19, we lose track of the great things we have experienced. Sadly everyone is not making it to see another day. Milestones of a birthday should be embraced even greater with the new uncertainty of life. When Debora told me she wanted to have a 60th photo shoot, I quickly jumped at the opportunity to help make her vision come true.

Being a product of Corona, New York, I knew my hands would be full with trying to make the “CITY GIRL” satisfied. Although she moved down south and attended Voorhess College, I was going to try and channel my inner creative spirits to exceed her expectations. So off we went to the South Carolina State House. After Debora, hit the scenes for her first shot, I was like, “Hmm. Where do we go next?”

She was in the moment. With the help of Debora’s sister, Yolanda, we were able to find our groove and create some breath taking images.

Debora, the mother of 3 and grandmother of 11, planned a birthday party and travel to Las Vegas for her celebration. She has always been a straightforward and gentle person, since meeting her years ago at our church, Brookland Baptist Church. Yes, I can sing. 🤦🏾‍♂️. I pray her 60th birthday, which was December 19, was grand and all she hoped it would be.

Employee of the Century at Brookland Baptist Church

At a young age, we are told to do our “lesson”, graduate and get a good job. With that job, rarely do we think we will be an employee for over 30 years. Yes, reaching 50 years of service is common. But to reach 50 years on the job when you were “recruited” for the job 59 years ago is rare.

Rev. Charles Benjamin Jackson, Sr. is a native of West Columbia, SC, where he attended the public schools of Lexington School District 2. At the age of 9, Jackson began preaching and at the age of 10, he was licensed. When he was 18, he was installed as the Pastor of his home church, Brookland Baptist Church. Reverend Jackson went on to receive degrees from Benedict College, Morehouse School of Religion of the International Theological Center, Columbia International University and the University of South Carolina.

While on the job over the 5 decades, Rev. Jackson has been the leader of a church, whose mission is to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, through evangelism, education and economic empowerment. A few building highlights of his tenure that have served the community in a mighty way are:

  1. Construction of a 2,200 seat sanctuary
  2. Construction of a 68,000 square Community Resource Center, which consist of the Health and Wellness Center, Academy Child Development Center, Banquet & Conference Center.
  3. Construction of the Brookland Federal Credit Union, the first (if not only) church owned Federal Credit Union
  4. Construction of a Community Learning Center, which consists of a Teen Center, Multi-Purpose Center, Children Church and other entities.
  5. Construction of the Brookland Baptist Church (Northeast Campus)

On October 17, 2021, it was time for the community & church to thank Jackson for his services. The service was held at the church and broadcasted via Facebook: Rev. Jackson’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. There were a plethora of dignitaries and speakers who shared reflections. Some noteworthy persons are:

  1. Rev. Carroll McGee
  2. Attorney I.S. Leevy Johnson, Owner & Director of Leevy’s Funeral Home
  3. Dr. Wendell Estep, retired Pastor of First Baptist Church Columbia
  4. Dr. Thurmond Bowens, Jr, Pastor of Trinity Baptist Church
  5. Dr. Jill Biden, current First Lady of The United States of America

Yup! You read that right! The First Lady made her way to the city of West Columbia. Not only did she bless the crowd, Pastor Jackson was blessed with the privilege of having an interchange named after him … right around the corner from his job. How cool! Here are a few pictures from that day …

When I tell you this was a day to remember, BELIEVE ME! Don’t believe me? Here is a link to all of the images highlighting the day: Pastor Jackson’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Gallery.

25 Years Later: Slaying in Silver at SC State

The date was February 23, 1996. With the conclusion of the afternoon classes, the sky was the limit on what was happening in the city of Orangeburg, South Carolina. Seems like everyone had something to do! Some people chilled & enjoyed the last days of Black History Month. Me: I had my to work my part job at UPS. But there were 73 young female students at South Carolina State University who were about to make a move that would change their lives forever.

By the conclusion of the day, the undergraduate chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated introduced those aforementioned ladies as new sorors into their organization. Those individuals went down in history as the 73 Soul Stirring Sisters and became members of one of the most popular group of “cool kid” on the yard during my days of matriculation. The Sisters of Delta eventually walked out of the doors of SCSU to greet the world in various, powerful ways. They would go on to hold many professional titles that varied from the list of Attorney, Accountants, Educators, Principals, Physician (MD), Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioner, Entrepreneurs, Financial Professionals, Engineer, and Speech Language Pathologists (to mention a few). To say THEY MADE MOVES is putting it lighly.

Since 1996, the group has remained connected via in person, Sister Circle meetups and virtual Zoom activities. In 2016, the line celebrated 20 years in Montego Bay, Jamaica and with a Homecoming tailgate celebration. In 2021, they decided on a photo shoot. 17 Sorors tracked back to where it all started & we had some fun creating magic. Here are a few sparks:

In true Bulldog Style, there were some ladies who wanted individiual pictures. I was there for all of that! I wanted the SMOKE. Here is a link to the images created: 73 Soul Stirring Sisters session.

It was good to see those teenagers turn into adults 25 years, after they had entered their chosen Greek Letter organization. I will always remember my collegiate time with those ladies but more than anything, I won’t forget how they remained true to SCSU and made numerous marks on this world that all alums should be proud of. HAIL HAIL!

We Talking Treasures

Entrepreneurship can be a glamorous thing. Entrepreneurship can be a hard thing. Entrepreneurship in your face can be a trivial thing. Katrina Johnson knows very well how a child of a entrepreneur can lead to many feelings & emotions.

A graduate of South Carolina State University, Katrina has 25 years of experience in the field of Education but she has a life time of experiences as a Child of an Entrepreneur. To illustrate her life as a Business owner’s daughter, she wrote a book entitled “Turning Trash Into Treasure.” Her book has appeared on Amazon’s Best Top Seller’s list and a very good read for school age children. To be honest, it was a great read for me, as an adult. It was a small documentary of her parent’s

A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc., Johnson has launched her website (which is decorated in the colors of pink & green). I love .. love … LOVE the website. The website is a synposis of her life: Katrina Johnson’s Website. I highly recommend each person reading this blog to visit her site and patronize this new author. Me vs The Selfie Studio

Sometimes you go into a battle, knowing you are ready. However, there can be a thought in your mind if you planned well enough. Months ago, I started communication with one of my fellow Brookland Baptist members. Angela is on the Praise Team, led by the legend John Lakin. Me: I’m just the lowly camera man. lol. We entered into conversation about me capturing her STYLE for her 40th Birthday. Although Angela’s is known throughout these United States as THE QUEEN OF THE SELFIE STUDIO, I felt as if I could do some justice.

We figured we’d manuever the city of Columbia for her birthday images. Although she attended the University of South Carolina, there were a few spots around the city she wasn’t familiar with. She trusted me enough to pick the location(s) for our session. I challenged myself to find some cool angles to compliment the young lady who has hobbies of reading, singing, spending time with family/friends, traveling and experiencing new adventures. Speaking of new adventures, I’m beyond happy for this North Charleston native. In early 2021, she opened Inspired Wellness, LLC., where she is the Psychotheraptist/Business Owner, specializing in Counseling and Therapy. FANCY! I likes.

Our session was relaxing and calming. Here are a few images we created …

And that is how the battle ended. The Selfie Queen and I met in the middle of the battle field to call the battle a win in favor of me. Angela left pleased and I left blessed she chose me to experience her 40th birthday pictorial explosions. Much success to this Business Owner and singer of the gospel.

Fantanstic at Fifty

Life is not to be taken for granted. Some good people never make it to be 10 years old. Some bad people easily hit 90 years of age. We have no room to judge who is good or who is bad. However, we can all be grateful for each new year we experience.

Rita reached out to me after seeing images I had taken for a 45th Birthday Session. I was very elated she found my work worthy of wanting to have MoSeawell Photography create memories for her 50th birthday. During our consulation, it warmed my heart to learn that images from her session would be turned into wall art, which would stand as heirlooms for her son, Caleb, and others to see now and for years to come. I thought it was very cool that the Moncks Corner native, who came to Columbia to attend Benedict College, was reaching the fantanstic age of 50 in great shape. All days are special but birthdays tend to have an extra shine to it. I asked RIta what she was going to do for her birthday & she mentioned that she would chilling in Hilton Head, SC, while enjoying fine dining, the beach, family and friends. Loved it!

So from there … it was time to get moving. We started off with emphasis on “50” …

Rita doned a white jumpsuit with jewelry that seamlessly matched her balloons. We made the WHITE WOBBLE and the PINK POP!!! Shout out to the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

After a wardrobe changed, Rita appeared wearing jeans and a sheer top. Fancy!!! Don’t believe me? Here she is in the flesh …

BAMMMM! Another successful session. The beauty of my job is learning more about my new clients. It was great knowing of Rita’s hobbies which includes traveling, good food, art, reading , and shopping. It was fun hanging out with a fellow June baby with a great personality. It was beyond delightful to help a hardworking Tech Expert from Verizon Wireless have Fantanstic customer service before hitting Fifty. Can you hear me now?!?

Next Phase of Life

Time flies & before you know it, you will be leaving one phase of life for another phase. Rather you be a city slicker or a country boy, you must embrace the paths you travel. My COUNTRY BOY PATH led me to South Carolina State University and I met a CITY SLICKER in Wayne Montgomery.

Born and raised in Queens, NY, Wayne moved down south and graduated from Kingstree Senior High. We met as freshmen and were very cordial to each other while attending the greatest university on earth. Upon graduation, it was time to transition to our next phase of life. Wayne went on to a higher calling in law enforcement. After 24 years of excelling in the State of South Carolina, he is currently an Investigator in the Violent Crimes Unit for the Columbia Police Department. I am huge fan of show, The First 48 & I find Wayne’s job intriguing. I don’t want the job but I think it is cool to know someone who is in the profession. After chatting with Wayne, it is obvious he thinks it is cool too but doesn’t want to do it forever. He plans on hanging up the badge in 2022. But what next?

Well, Wayne has always been a fairly level headed guy. As we were taught at SCSU, an alternative plan is always a must. Montgomery plans to transition into Real Estate and own/operate a Private Investigation Firm. The guy is on another level and already has got the wheels turning with his Real Estate Business. You can see more at Southern Shores Real Estate Group. I am not one to stop a Bulldog from excelling. It is my job to help out and push him higher. Here are a few images we captured during his branding session …

Pleased is what we were, upon leaving our session. I am honored my college classmate called me to help reach the next phase of life, in style.

I guess this is where I get off.  Snap at you later. BE EZ. PEACE!!! #moseawell #clickclique #beEZpeace

.. and from Beautiful Bride to Marvelous Mommy

The say that TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE!  It seemed like just a few months ago when I shot bridal portraits for my cousin, Lauren.   Well, actually it was almost 3 years ago but who is counting?!?  I thought she would wait for me to published in Essence or Black Enterprise before we shot images again.  Silly me!  Looking back on that blog (From Brown Baby to Beautiful Bride), I was so happy for her.  Now, here she was, standing before me as a married graduate of Winthrop University.    This time, she was with her husband, Ben, a fellow Winthrop Eagle.  She looked a little different from the last time I had seen her in person.  Lauren was with child!

The session started very smoothly. I asked the PARENTS-TO-BE to sit and get comfortable, as I prepared my lighting.  It was time to put the Nikon to work. As they got comfy, I shot some candid images of them enjoying the South Carolina pre-summer air.
Lauren's Maternity-3

Once they were set and I was in place, we got a quick image of the couple (and the bundle of joy).

Lauren's Maternity-10

Not to be selfish and throw Cousin Ben away but this session was all about Lauren.  We slowly helped her up (she is in great shape: I’m just being dramatic) and she took position in front of a flower bed.  Lauren is a Nutritionist/Lactation Counselor.  Therefore, she has fitness, well-being and youth on her side. 🙂 With her dress flowing and the sun shining, the beauty of her maternalness was on full display.

Lauren's Maternity-13

I am a caring photographer.  So it wasn’t uncommon for me to allow the mother to catch a seat and hold her bundle of joy.  I managed to steal a moment of her caressing her baby.  A mother & her baby: what a combination to behold!!!

Lauren's Maternity-21

Not only am I a caring photographer but I am an inclusive photographer.  Lauren and I had made some great memories.  I felt that it was time to get “Dad” back into the scene.  An Interal Auditor by trade, the image incapitulates Ben auditing the happiness of Lauren enjoying the day with him and the “little” one. Lauren's Maternity-25

As we moved toward the end of the session, we paused to allow Ben a chance to further appreciate the mother of his child in the form of an embrace and kiss on the forehead.
Lauren's Maternity-30

Quick to arrive and quick to leave, it was time to send my clients off on their way.  They had driven in from the city of Rock Hill to spend some precious moments with me.  Grateful for the opportunity, we ended our time together with one final shot of the three of them.  World, I present to you Ben, Lauren and Brayden Ndubuisi Ikenegbu!

Lauren's Maternity-48

how did THAT work out for you?!?

Special shout to all of the fathers that celebrate their day on this past Sunday.  I hope you had a great Father’s Day weekend and you feel more encouraged to do more than you have done already. We can always do more and make the world a better place to be.

Welp, that wraps up the latest blog.  I’ve been missing for a few but I’mmmm back.    Snap at you later. BE EZ. PEACE!!! #beEZpeace

Not 1, Not 2, Not … but 58 Years of Bliss!!!

For a whopping $0.31, a gallon of gas was yours.  There was a baby boy born that went onto become the 44th president of the United States, while answering to the name of Barack.  A young Seward found it not a crime to make a stunning Barbara his wife.  The year was 1961 and life was good in Hemingway, South Carolina.

From that union, life was greater than great.  Seward, a high school principal/chemistry teacher played golf in his free time and accepted the additional role of Daddy, over the following years.

MSP_6352

A Licensed Practical Nurse, Barbara thrusted herself into church/community service and became the ideal mother for little ones.

MSP_6308

Time was on their side and God allowed the couple to see life take form in 5 children: D’Ette Weaver, Adreane Grant, Bernita Stuckey, Seward Weaver, Jr. and Sherwood Weaver, Sr.

MSP_6518

Although Sherwood passed at an early age, his life is still cherished and the family bond remains strong.

MSP_6496

My session with the family was nothing short of fun.  Seeing the chemistry of the couple was great after being together over 50 years!  They fed off of each other for energy and admiration.

I WEAVEDd out some astonishing pictures while capturing the Weavers.    Grateful to have snapped the pre-anniversary photos, the couple was quite funny when getting their “5” and “8” together.

Yeah, they had it right but I scripted it to appear even more exciting!  Here is a link to the other magic that we made: Weaver’s Session.

Little Did I Know!!!

1994 was a great year but wow, little did I know! Here I was excited about my first job at U.P.S. while a student at South Carolina State University, 30 minutes up I-26, 44 ladies of the working class had bigger goals. Although my favorite artist, Mary J. Blige, had dropped “My Life“, little did I like that there was a group of ladies making some astonishing graduation level noise. True I bought my first car, a 1994 Honda Accord EX Coupe, that year same group of women were on the move uniting likeminded females to handle a major task.

44 members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated went through the necessary hoops and horizons to have the second chapter created in the Columbia Metropolitan area. The name approved was the Richland County Alumnae Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. They have become affectionately called ‘”RCA.”

On April 27, 2019, a number of those charter members were joined with current RCA members, national DST officers, past RCA members and other Deltas (and me) to celebrate 25 years of Sisterhood, Scholarship & Service at their Silver Anniversary Celebration Brunch.

It was a grand event and I was glad to have been chosen to photograph the event. I did my research on Dr. Bertha Maxwell Roddey.

I now know why she was held in such high regard like the GODMOTHER. An amazing lady!!!

Anywho, here is what I saw …

… and that is just a taste. Here is a link to the other images: RCA 25th Anniversary! It was good to see so many friends/old co-workers/fellow alums/church members/associates celebrate a great occasion. I always felt that MARY’S JOINT (a song off of Mary J. Blige’s album) was the dopest female thing to happen in 1994 but the Deltas making strides to better tomorrow’s leaders and service the community gives MJB some serious competition.
