Me vs The Selfie Studio

Sometimes you go into a battle, knowing you are ready. However, there can be a thought in your mind if you planned well enough. Months ago, I started communication with one of my fellow Brookland Baptist members. Angela is on the Praise Team, led by the legend John Lakin. Me: I’m just the lowly camera man. lol. We entered into conversation about me capturing her STYLE for her 40th Birthday. Although Angela’s is known throughout these United States as THE QUEEN OF THE SELFIE STUDIO, I felt as if I could do some justice.

We figured we’d manuever the city of Columbia for her birthday images. Although she attended the University of South Carolina, there were a few spots around the city she wasn’t familiar with. She trusted me enough to pick the location(s) for our session. I challenged myself to find some cool angles to compliment the young lady who has hobbies of reading, singing, spending time with family/friends, traveling and experiencing new adventures. Speaking of new adventures, I’m beyond happy for this North Charleston native. In early 2021, she opened Inspired Wellness, LLC., where she is the Psychotheraptist/Business Owner, specializing in Counseling and Therapy. FANCY! I likes.

Our session was relaxing and calming. Here are a few images we created …

And that is how the battle ended. The Selfie Queen and I met in the middle of the battle field to call the battle a win in favor of me. Angela left pleased and I left blessed she chose me to experience her 40th birthday pictorial explosions. Much success to this Business Owner and singer of the gospel.

Well, guess this is where I get off.  Snap at you later. BE EZ. PEACE!!! #moseawell #clickclique #beEZpeace

Fantanstic at Fifty

Life is not to be taken for granted. Some good people never make it to be 10 years old. Some bad people easily hit 90 years of age. We have no room to judge who is good or who is bad. However, we can all be grateful for each new year we experience.

Rita reached out to me after seeing images I had taken for a 45th Birthday Session. I was very elated she found my work worthy of wanting to have MoSeawell Photography create memories for her 50th birthday. During our consulation, it warmed my heart to learn that images from her session would be turned into wall art, which would stand as heirlooms for her son, Caleb, and others to see now and for years to come. I thought it was very cool that the Moncks Corner native, who came to Columbia to attend Benedict College, was reaching the fantanstic age of 50 in great shape. All days are special but birthdays tend to have an extra shine to it. I asked RIta what she was going to do for her birthday & she mentioned that she would chilling in Hilton Head, SC, while enjoying fine dining, the beach, family and friends. Loved it!

So from there … it was time to get moving. We started off with emphasis on “50” …

Rita doned a white jumpsuit with jewelry that seamlessly matched her balloons. We made the WHITE WOBBLE and the PINK POP!!! Shout out to the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

After a wardrobe changed, Rita appeared wearing jeans and a sheer top. Fancy!!! Don’t believe me? Here she is in the flesh …

BAMMMM! Another successful session. The beauty of my job is learning more about my new clients. It was great knowing of Rita’s hobbies which includes traveling, good food, art, reading , and shopping. It was fun hanging out with a fellow June baby with a great personality. It was beyond delightful to help a hardworking Tech Expert from Verizon Wireless have Fantanstic customer service before hitting Fifty. Can you hear me now?!?

Little Did I Know!!!

1994 was a great year but wow, little did I know! Here I was excited about my first job at U.P.S. while a student at South Carolina State University, 30 minutes up I-26, 44 ladies of the working class had bigger goals. Although my favorite artist, Mary J. Blige, had dropped “My Life“, little did I like that there was a group of ladies making some astonishing graduation level noise. True I bought my first car, a 1994 Honda Accord EX Coupe, that year same group of women were on the move uniting likeminded females to handle a major task.

44 members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated went through the necessary hoops and horizons to have the second chapter created in the Columbia Metropolitan area. The name approved was the Richland County Alumnae Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. They have become affectionately called ‘”RCA.”

On April 27, 2019, a number of those charter members were joined with current RCA members, national DST officers, past RCA members and other Deltas (and me) to celebrate 25 years of Sisterhood, Scholarship & Service at their Silver Anniversary Celebration Brunch.

It was a grand event and I was glad to have been chosen to photograph the event. I did my research on Dr. Bertha Maxwell Roddey.

I now know why she was held in such high regard like the GODMOTHER. An amazing lady!!!

Anywho, here is what I saw …

… and that is just a taste. Here is a link to the other images: RCA 25th Anniversary! It was good to see so many friends/old co-workers/fellow alums/church members/associates celebrate a great occasion. I always felt that MARY’S JOINT (a song off of Mary J. Blige’s album) was the dopest female thing to happen in 1994 but the Deltas making strides to better tomorrow’s leaders and service the community gives MJB some serious competition.

WOOD the natural fit work for you???

All too often, there is a lot emphasis placed on the word “one.” In sports, we hear, “We are number one!” It is common to listen to someone in education to ask a failing child to try “One more time.” In fashion, stores will tell the shoppers that “one size fits all.”

The company of WOODBURY COLLECTION feels that men’s fashion should flow away from the misnomer. Managed by Wayne Woodbury and Andre Watson, the team believes that a suit should not be the standard “pull from the rack” but it should be the extraordinary “perfect fit for the client.” Based in Charlotte, NC, Woodbury & Watson boaster the motto of, “Your Fit. Your Style.” Since 2009, the organization has outfitted clients in numerous east coast cities that range from Queens, New York to Miami, Florida.

Here are a few images of the dynamic duo …

The men were captured below consulting with past clients on their upcoming wardrobe additions

I read a quote that said, “A well-tailored suit is to women what lingerie is to men.” I can’t speak for women nor can I speak for other men, but I place pride into my suits. I have found it not robbery to attain a slice of the Woodbury Collection. Listed below is a snapshot of the author of this blog in his chosen attire.

From the hugeness of my kool-aid smile, one can see that I am beyond pleased with my purchase. I am one that wants to support like minded entrepreneurs and look nice at the same time. Hopefully you feel the same. But the question is WOOD the natural fit work for you??? If so, reach out to Wayne & Dre.

The Queens of My Heart

Love is patient. Love is kind. Love is something that not everyone feels.  To find love is a beautiful a thing. But to be birthed from love is something worth talking about.

Being a resident of Orangeburg is to be a product of love.  Though a small city in the state of South Carolina, the majority of folks that are raised in the 29115 zip code have great pride & admiration from their upbringing.  Not a place with a lot of fancy restaurants or million dollar homes, the town has been the heartbeat for a lot of successful persons.

I was called on to capture press images for Miss Orangeburg County and Miss Orangeburg County Teen 2018.  Having worked closely with the Genius behind the Pageant, Angela Clark, this was certain to be a memorable session.  It was going to be solid because not only was I photographing two positive young ladies, I was spending time with residents of Orangeburg that held a title that would include them into the national history books.  Cadra Salley, Miss Orangeburg County, is currently a student at South Carolina State University.  Zaria Sumpter is presently matriculating at the High School for Health Operations.

As the session started, the beauty of Miss Salley was snapped without any hiccups

Next up was time to photograph the elegance of Miss Sumpter and things fell into place effortlessly.

Proud of what we had accomplished, I threw my Nikon down as if I just scored a Touchdown.  Okay, maybe not … but I was pleased with the work we had done.  Without a shadow of a doubt,  I feel the residents of Orangeburg should have a chip on their shoulders knowing that our place was represented outstandingly in 2018 with those two jewels.  The 2019 Pageant is scheduled on November 3rd, where Cadra and Zaria will release their crowns to Qualified and Orangeburg-a-fied ladies that will represent the Garden City.

And The Beat Goes On

Strong and determined: this girl stood out to me.  Big smile and commanded attention by her actions: this girl stood out to me.  The oldest daughter of parent educators that openedly loves the Lord: this girl stood out to me.

At the conclusion of the 2017-2018 school year, I completed my SENIOR PHOTOGRAPHY SEASON with a Graduation Celebration.  The celebration was for Spring Valley High School Graduate, Reagan Davis.  Reagan is an active member of my church and has always carried herself in a positive manner.  In the fall, she will be attending the University of South Carolina.  Proud of her accomplishments and accolades, I share with you some of the sites from her big day …

Well Done, My Son

Friendships can be fun. Friendships can be memorable. Friendships are taken to new heights when emotions are involved & you are asked to do grown folk stuff. After graduating from South Carolina State University, one of my dearest friends, Tiffany, was blessed with a child that she named Tyler. During the pregnancy, she asked me to be his godfather. Still young, I quickly accepted not thinking of the “true meaning” of being a godparent. Before he was born, I reflected on my godparents and our relationship and was reminded of the dutiful task I had accepted. In a nutshell, I was to treat Tyler as if he was my child (just like a father does) and agree to be there for him in the event anything happened to his birth parents.

Fast forward close to two decades from me signing up to be The Godfather and Tyler residing in multiple states and excelling in basketball, high school graduation was upon us. He was scheduled to be a graduate of Atlantic Coast High School. Anxious to see him march & document that day, I pulled out the Nikon.

Once inside and the clock said so, the festivities begun …

Those were just a few highlights that came through my lense. Glad I pushed against the grain of the venue and took my 70-200mm. It allowed me to get closer to the action with room to crop in on my final pictures. Anyway, here are a few after-graduation images of the graduate hanging with his family & friends ….

Another young black male destined for excellence and defied the odds stating that he wouldn’t graduate. Tyler will be matriculating in the fall at Troy University. I am very proud of this young man and even more proud of Tiffany. She started the early part of her adulthood as a single mother of one and blossomed into a married mother of three.

I was blessed to be asked to be GODFATHER TODD. I was and still am happy for him. Seeing Tyler embrace the start of his new phase of life was refreshing. Having his family there was surely a great thing for the graduate that he will never forget. Here is a final image of his village.

“Son, go forth and be greater than great because being great is not the greatest thing that you can do.”

how did THAT work out for you?!?

Very grateful weekend where I celebrated Fathers. I started the weekend with a quick 7 mile run before heading out to photograph the Daddy & Me 5K. The event will be covered in a future blog. Thennnnnnnn, I spent time with my little Princess for Father’s Day.

She makes me happy. Well, time to bail. Snap at you later. BE EZ. PEACE!!! #moseawell #beEZpeace

Can you hear me now?

When your mobile phone alerts or vibrates with a text message, there is a split second that you try to guess who the text message could be. A particular sound could notify you whom the person could be. Other times, it is a mystery. My phone alerted me that someone needed my attention. The message came from my childhood friend, Adeire. Graduation pictures were needed for her daughter. THE END!

Adeire and I are classmates that first met at Nix Elementary School and we graduated together from Orangeburg-Wilkinson High. Since becoming adults with our different careers, I was called on by her to shoot her son’s senior high school photos and her daughter’s pre-prom pictures. This time, I was called to shoot her daughter’s graduation pictures. Upon reaching out for the daughter’s info, I found it was her daughter, Hydeia. Hydeia was the daughter whose pre-prom pics I had taken three years earlier. We produced excellent event images that were taken at Edisto Memorial Gardens. I was very excited to see the energy that we create for our second session, considering we would have a special attraction on set: Savannah. Savannah is the daughter of Hydeia.  Anxious to see her, magic was made from the first click of the Nikon …

Session over!  Everyone was happy.  Next up is graduation from Midlands Technical College and Hydeia will be continuing her education in the fall at Coastal Carolina  for Intelligence and National Security Studies.  Needless to say, I am on speed dial for both Hydeia and her mom.  We’re closer.  We’ve hung out more.  I know them.  They know me.  No need to act clueless when I am texted for the next big milestone because they both have special alerts and I can hear them now.

how did THAT work out for you?!?

And we’reeeee back!  This past weekend I picked up a little hardware. Nothing major to brag about but I was able to get in some organized cardio and be awarded for it.  This race is special to me because of the emphasis it puts on Breast Cancer Awareness.  It is called Get In The Pink 10K/5K Race.  I placed 3rd in my age group. Yay Me!!!  I’ll take it.

Concluding my weekend was time watching my daughter participate in her second tennis clinic as a 3 year old. I will write a blog on that a little later and keep you in suspense for those images.   To say it was interesting is mildly stating it.  Ohhhhh yeah …. quality time with mom for Mother’s Day.  Just lovely!!!

… before we go any further …

In 1984, three wise men put their lyrical quest for understanding into a simple catchy hook that jumped at the musical savy saying, “Friends – how many of us have them? Friends – onces can depend on … before we go any further, let’s be friends.”  Just 10 years later in the summer of 1994, I established a great friendship with one of the starting defensive players from the South Carolina State University Football Team.  He and I worked as Counselors for the 1890 Research and Extension Program. Years later, he married his College Sweetheart and started a family.

As we became adults, we kept in touch & frequently hung out during football seasons. As friends, we never hesitated to call on each other to aid where a need was to be met.  I was elated when my phone rung to capture the Sweet 16 Birthday session of his daughter, Amaya.  What a great time was had with her and her friends. Here, see for yourself: Amaya’s Sweet 16. Needless to say, I was really excited a few weeks ago when I got a text from his wife’s phone … well, his daughter texting on his wife’s phone … requesting that I make my way down to Orangeburg to capture images from Amaya’s prom date. Oh gosh.  Was I excited and nervous!  Here I was about to take pictures of one of my favorite couple’s baby girl.  I was summons to take images of the little girl that ran from me in Walmart as a toddler.  My duty was to swoop in and make memories for my friend.  You know, the one that I established a relationship with years ago.  Now, I was there to show that I was one that he could depend on.

Week of prom arrives and the camera was ready but the venue was still unknown.  I could have asked the favorite couple to pick the location but why would I do something like that?  I was one that they could depend on.  So after rolling into the Garden City and meeting up with Amaya and her date, Skylar, it was time to let the good times roll.  Put on your seatbelts and take a quick pre-prom stroll with us …Amaya & Skylar Prom 2018-16Amaya & Skylar Prom 2018-17Amaya & Skylar Prom 2018-27Amaya & Skylar Prom 2018-38Amaya & Skylar Prom 2018-41Amaya & Skylar Prom 2018-61Amaya & Skylar Prom 2018-64Amaya & Skylar Prom 2018-73Amaya & Skylar Prom 2018-58

Pre-Prom 2018 was a success.  Here are the images: Amaya & Skylar’s pre-prom pictures The weather was great.  Skylar and Amaya had fun during the session.  The Village enjoyed seeing Skylar and Amaya make images that will never be forgotten.  Moreover, my friends got to see their daughter attend her first prom.  It’s amazing how life takes you from one phase to another with constant moving parts.  It seemed like it was just yesterday that we played pool on our lunch break as college students.  In actuality, it was just a few days ago when I was able to hug the teenager that ran from me in the frozen food section when younger.  To hear her say, “Thank you Mister Todd” was confirmation that I did a great thing yearssss ago in cementing a friendship with her father.  Before we went any further, we became friends.  #rackEm

how did THAT work out for you?!?

OMG!  I literally don’t know how to act.  Last week made the second week in a row with no road race.  I logged very close to 20 miles for the week but nothing worth screaming about.  However, if I had to make some noise about anything, it would be about capturing some future leaders in pre-graduation and pre-prom images.  OH YES!  Two sessions on last week and we made magic.  If I were you, I would show in a few days to see for yourself what transpired.  Snap at you later. Bury good, Doc! Bury good!!!

Growing up with my father as my hero, I was able to easily identify how a man should act and carry himself.  I saw the importance in always presenting your best.  I was frequently reminded of the strength in standing behind what you believe.  I never will forget the lessons that were taught from non-verbal communication.

In the mid 80’s, I was introduced to the family that belonged to Dr. Willie Woodbury. During that time, he was the Director at The Felton Laboratory School on the campus of South Carolina State University.  Dr. Woodbury went on to lead Felton for well over 20 years and graduated some of the top students in the Orangeburg area.  Since meeting Dr. Woodbury, I have always drawn a similarity to his personality to that of my father.  Like my father, he is a man of very few words but the words that he speaks are very powerful.  Like my father, he is a man that is well respected by his peers and those that are in direct contact with him.  And moreover like my father, he is a man of God.

I was blessed to be at Thee Matriarch Bed & Breakfast, when Dr. Woodbury celebrated his 70th birthday party.  It was such a beautiful event hosted by his family.  A number of his friends and family members were on hand to witness his day.  Pause for one second as I share a few snaps of what I saw …

how did THAT work out for you?!?

Extremely light week last week.  No race in the book.  No medal around my neck.  No fatty food that was a reward for running a ton of miles.  I poured in less than 20 miles total for the week in preparation for upcoming races. But I did capture a pre-prom session that I’m excited to share with you. Stay tuned.  I think you will like what you will see.  Snap at you later. BE EZ. PEACE!!! #moseawell #beEZpeace
